Abstract

The need for hand sanitizers is increasing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. This causes the availability of alcohol as a raw material for hand sanitizers to run low. Therefore, an alternative to alcohol is needed from natural resources that can be renewed but still have good quality. One of the alcohol substitutes that can be developed is palm fruit mesocarp bioethanol. This study aims to determine the potential of hand sanitizers made from palm fruit mesocarp bioethanol as raw material. The method used in this paper is a literature study. Sources of data in the form of secondary data which is then identified and reduced according to the purpose of writing. The mesocarp of the lontar fruit is the skin of the lontar fruit which is still not optimally utilized. The mesocarp of lontar fruit contains saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids. A study also showed that palm fruit mesocarp bioethanol can inhibit bacterial growth. To increase the effectiveness of the product, olive oil is added which also contains flavonoids and can soften hands. By looking at the high demand for hand sanitizers, the availability of abundant raw materials, and good effectiveness, this hand sanitizer has good potential to be developed in Indonesia.
